Rare 1948 Dunhill Patent Shell

Dunhill had a name for this shape but neither I nor anyone I've asked know what it is.  Whatever, it's extremely unusual and in beautiful condition.  Nomenclature, on the bottom of the bowl, is:  "550" over "DUNHILL SHELL" over "Made in England" followed by an underlined "8" over "Patent No. 417574/34."  The little teat of a "shank" appears to be aluminum.  The pipe will be delivered in a nice suede leather pouch.  If you can shed any light on this shape, I would appreciate hearing from you.
